Air quality can also be sustainably improved: Plants reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide, increase air humidity, and can even clean the air of pollutants. 1. Rubber tree

In the past, the rubber tree (Ficus elastica) was found almost in every household, after which the leafy ornamental plant was long considered stuffy and old-fashioned. Recently, however, the rubber plant can be found more and more often and is slowly becoming an insider’s tip for green plant lovers. However, with its large, firm leaves and imposing stature (with good care, the rubber tree can easily reach room height), the plant is also truly a decorative eye-catcher. At the same time, the rubber tree requires little care if it is in the right location.

2. Poinsettia

Every year poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima) come again. For a long time it has been one of the most popular Christmas plants at all and can be found in almost every household during the winter. What many do not know: The poinsettia also makes a great houseplant during the rest of the year or can even be transplanted into a bed. Because with its mostly white or red bracts, the plant is almost always a great eye-catcher, which can be staged not only classic-Christmas, but also modern and stylish.

3. Calathea

Exciting jungle atmosphere in your own living room? With the Calathea this is possible without any problems – the exotic jungle dweller thrives as a houseplant in apartments at home. With its large leaves that impress with extravagant patterns and fantastic hues, the plant will add a seductive charm to any room. Its status as a popular houseplant is probably also due to its easy-care nature: if you give it the right location, it needs almost no attention. 4. Amaryllis

Large flowers in white, delicate pink or bright red – the amaryllis (Hippeastrum), also known as delphinium, is probably one of the most impressive flowering plants that can be cultivated indoors. Especially its spectacular single flowers, which appear from October to March, add to the charm of this exotic beauty. In order for the amaryllis to feel comfortable, it needs a bright, warm place without direct sunlight. 5. Mind-your-own-business

Who’s wearing a sassy short hairstyle? This can only be a mind-your-own-business plant (Soleirolia soleirolii) or ‘Paddy’s wig’, as it is sometimes called. With its delicate and dense leaves, this herbaceous houseplant really does look like a mop of hair. Although at first glance mind-your-own-business seems rather inconspicuous, it can become an attractive eye-catcher as a houseplant. Thus, it is popular for underplanting large houseplants, but can also be used alone as a hanging plant great accents in the room.

6. Begonia

A time-honored classic of houseplants is the begonia (Begonia). Already for 100 years the plant is with us in the trade and since then enjoys great popularity. No wonder, after all, the begonia captivates with a huge variety of species and is distinguished especially by its year-around abundance of flowers. These flowers, available in almost any colour, ensure that the begonia expresses itself as a real feast for the eyes in the apartment.

7. Jade plant

As a symbol of wealth and prosperity, the jade plant (Crassula ovata) is often given as a gift at weddings or other celebrations – perhaps this is why the succulent is found in many households. Its numerous, positive qualities might also the reason for the popularity of the plant. The money tree with its thick, reddish-edged leaves is not only extremely decorative, but also particularly easy to care for. In addition, the money tree is considered extremely long-lived – larger specimens are not uncommon for several generations in one family.

8. Orchid

Orchids (Orchidaceae) are often considered difficult to care for and are known to be true divas. Thus, they make great demands on their location, need special orchid fertiliser and even when watering the orchids you need to pay attention to some things. Nevertheless, in many households you can find the sophisticated flowers. After all, with the exotic beauty that orchids display, the elaborate care is quickly forgotten: Many orchid species boast opulent flowers in bright colours and the choice of different variations is almost immeasurable. Thus, the orchid will quickly become the secret highlight of any room.

9. ZZ plant

You want a plant that is suitable as a solitary, looks beautiful and is also easy to care for? Then the ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is probably just what you need. With its shiny, leathery leaves and a height of up to one metre, this houseplant is perfect for creating decorative accents in the room. At the same time, the ZZ plant is also one of the easiest to care for houseplants ever. It needs hardly any attention and can easily withstand prolonged neglect. Additionally, this succulent is one of the few houseplants that does wonderfully well in shady spots – although the plant is actually far too pretty to hide in dark corners.

Those who are not put off by the sharp spines will quickly find cacti (Cactaceae) to be decorative and, at the same time, low-maintenance roommates. With their great variety of species and varieties in a wide range of shapes and colours, cacti represent one of the most multifaceted plant genera, which can add a touch of exoticism and adventure to any home. However, the houseplants are especially popular because the care is not very laborious: they require little watering and hardly need any other attention.
