I study plant biotechnology and often find myself confronted with the serious consequences that lack of knowledge and misinformation can have for nature. That is why I am so passionate about bringing people and nature closer together again.

Cyclamen, especially as a houseplant, are sensitive in terms of watering. We show how to properly water the delicate cyclamen.

Cyclamen (Cyclamen) usually bloom in beautiful shades of purple and pink, which, depending on the species, brighten up the winter or bring variety to the summer and autumn. So these dainty little plants decorate the flower bed as well as the windowsill. But, unfortunately, the issue of watering the popular tuberous plants should be treated with caution. Neither too much nor too little cool water is allowed, otherwise the perennial plants will quickly become sick. We show you what you have to do to enjoy the delicate flowers of the flowering primrose plants (Primulaceae) for a long time.

How often to water cyclamen?

How often to water a cyclamen, ultimately depends on many factors. However, watering should be done before the tuber is completely dry. It is best to water as soon as the top layer of soil dries out. In general, the following applies to watering cyclamen:

  • Pot: at any time of the year
  • Bed: after long drought & in summer heat (evening or morning)

As a general rule, watering is more frequent during flowering. In addition, watering in the winter is less frequent than in the summer. Cyclamen in the bed may also need watering after rainfall. Check if after a rainfall the soil under the leaves has become wet. The large foliage leaves often prevent the water, which is essential for survival, from reaching the roots.

How to water cyclamen properly?

Waterlogging is not at all well tolerated by cyclamen. They are then very quickly prone to late blight or other diseases and eventually perish. For this reason, the right watering tactics are particularly important for potted cyclamen. There are two variants. Firstly, the plants can be watered with the immersion method:

  • Fill bucket with water
  • Immerse pot with cyclamen in bucket
  • Immerse in water but do not allow the tuber to get wet at the top
  • Wait until no more air bubbles appear
  • Drain pot

Or you can water your cyclamen from the bottom:

  • Fill saucer with water
  • Pour off remaining water after 30 minutes

This should give you many years of pleasure from your potted plant. When watering cyclamen in a bed, just make sure (as with potted plants) that the leaves and the flower do not get wet. This means cyclamen is never sprayed with a water spray.

Watering cyclamen and avoiding yellow leaves

If your cyclamen develop yellow leaves, it is very rarely because the plants are actually sick. In most cases, incorrect watering is the culprit. At the same time yellow leaves can indicate both too much and too little water. But it may also be because the plants are too cold or too warm.
